Table of Contents
Golden Retriever was first introduced as the Golden Flat-Coat. For many years, Golden Retrievers were said to be the descendants of Russian sheepdogs bought from a circus. In fact, they originally bred in Scotland in the mid-19th century at the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks, later known as Lord Tweedmouth.
Wildfowl hunting was a popular sport for the wealthy Scottish elite at that time, however, the existing retriever breeds were inadequate for retrieving downed game from both water and land. Therefore, Tweedmouth decided to mix the best water with the existing retrievers, which resulted in the establishment of the breed today known as the Golden Retriever.
Like many other men at that time, Tweedmouth wanted to perfect different breeds. From 1835 to 1890, he was aiming for a Golden with exceptional characteristics: a talented retriever with a superb nose, loyalty and even- temper in the home.
Tweedmouth bred Nous- a yellow-colored retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel female dog named Belle. Although Tweed Water Spaniels has become extinct nowadays, they were common in the border country at that time. They were amazingly kind and friendly dog, known for being eager retrievers in the hunting field, and super calm and loyal — characteristics you’ll find in today’s Golden Retrievers.
Later on, Nous and Belle’s descendants were bred with a wavy-coated retriever, another Tweed Water Spaniel, and a red setter. Tweedmouth kept mostly the yellow puppies to continue his breeding program, and gave others away to friends and relatives. The ancestry of the Golden Retriever is all sporting dog, therefore, Golden Retriever is active and powerful and has a gentle mouth for retrieving games while on hunts.
In the United Kingdom
The Kennel Club first accepted Golden Retrievers for registration as Flat Coats – Golden in 1903. They were first exhibited in 1908, and in 1911 were recognized as a distinct breed. It was not until 1920 that the breed had an official name: Golden Retriever.
In the United States
The breed was finally recognized in America by the American Kennel Club in 1925. Today, the Golden Retriever is the second most popular breed in the U.S. According to the purebred dog guide recognized by the American Kennel Club, Golden Retrievers are judged based on a variety of traits: color, coat, ears, feet, nose, body,…
The breed was first registered in Canada in 1927, and the Golden Retriever Club of Ontario (GRCO) was formed in 1958. Later, the GCRO expanded to become the Golden Retriever Club of Canada.
How About Their Physical Traits?
The Golden Retriever is a medium-large dog breed with a healthy, balanced body and water-proof wavy hair. They have a large head and a little snout with a wide, strong jaw and sharp teeth. The neck is long, strong and muscular. Also, they have a long and straight tail.
Due to the widespread popularity in the history, some regional variations have emerged in the breed, resulting in three subtypes: British, American and Canadian Golden Retriever. The subtypes remain typical traits of the breed but they have slightly differences in dimensions and coat.
The Golden Retriever was first bred in Scotland. Generally, British-type golden retrievers are more muscular than North American ones and they also have thicker coats and heavier weights.
British-type retrievers have broader skulls than those of other types and their muzzle is balanced and well-defined. They usually have round and dark eyes. The coat is generally lighter in color than in the American types. They can have a coat colour ranging from gold to cream; red or mahogany are not recognized. Originally, cream was an unacceptable colour in the UK standard, but the standard was changed in 1936 to include cream.

Size: males stand between 23 and 24 inches in height; females are 21.5 to 22.5 inches.

Golden Retrievers have mild feathering on the backs of their fore legs and heavier feathering on the fronts of their necks, backs of their thighs and the bottoms of their tails.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), a standard coat is a “rich, lustrous golden of various shades”, any extremely light or extremely dark coats are not permitted. Therefore, white golden retriever, red golden retriever or black golden retriever are unacceptable. However English cream golden retrievers are still recognized as golden retrievers despite the light coat color by English and Canadian authorities.
Adult golden retriever puppies have lighter coats than those of adults.

How to take care of your golden?
Golden Retriever dogs were originally bred for the physically demanding job of retrieving ducks and other fowl for hunters, the Golden needs daily exercise: a walk or jog, free time in the yard, a run at the beach or lake (Goldens love water), or a game of fetch.
You should also include him in your family activities besides outdoor activities because the Golden always needs to be with his “pack”. Playing with your dog can not only nurture the relationship between you and your pet but also make him feel happier and release stress.
